Life's ups and downs

I thank God for giving me 77 years of a meaningful life in the service of God, country and people.

One valuable lesson I learned through the years is that life is not a bed of roses. It is a series of ups and downs.

I ran for office 8 times. I lost 3 times. I was appointed to 5 Cabinet positions. I was fired twice. After every setback, I resolved to do better.

I remember the saying “the greatness of a man lies not in never falling but in rising after every fall.”

I thank all of those who have helped and supported me for the last 54 years.

Take the case of Tiger Woods, the champion golfer. For more than 10 years he was no. 1. Suddenly personal problems caused him to suffer a downfall. For more than 2 1/2 years, he could not win. After retraining and reforming his game and his lifestyle, he came back this week and won the World Golf Championship, the Arnold Palmer invitational in Orlando, US.
