Chinese New Year greeting in Cebuano

- The Ear -

CHINESE NEW YEAR. The most common greeting during the Chinese New Year was Kung Hei Fat Choi. But some business firms used in their ads greetings other Chinese languages like Hung Hei Fat Choi, Kiong Hee Huat Tsai, Gong Xi Fa Cai, Xin Nian Huai Ke, etc.

IN CEBUANO. But a Chinese oldtimer in Cebu who runs a sari-sari store in Lahug hung this simple streamer on his store with the greeting: “Malipayong Chinese New Year!” He assured a friend he was not joking. He said he thought about his streamer only this year. “Sunod tuig tarpulin na gyud akung gamiton.”
