Facing our problems with open mouth

HAVE BAT WILL STRIKE - Juanito V. Jabat   -

A political leader who had one drink too many was heard saying this in a hotel lobby: “The corrupt should be left alone with their wealth, after all they stole it fair and square.”

A fellow mediaman says our lawmakers, or some of them at least, talk too much about our problems as if talking too much can solve them. “I once read somewhere about a politician who said: “We Pinoys try to solve our problems with an open mouth.”

South Korea’s national football coach was fired after Sokor’s loss to Lebanon. In the PHL the word we use is “footballed.”

Boom Boom Bautista said he would like his Mexican opponent eat his word for saying he would KO the local boy (that was before their fight last Saturday). Eating one’s word should not be discouraged. It’s healthier than eating pork.

The famous Winston Churchill once said he had eaten his word many times but he did not suffer from indigestion.

The beautification program of the city is hailed as a step in the right direction by photojournalist Loy Jurado (he who knows what beauty is when he sees one).

Loy says the beautification of Osmeña Blvd. is most commendable. Tiles na ang sidewalk. Pero gipabalik ang mga sidewalk vendors. It defeats the purpose. Mura hinoon og ilang gipanindot ang sidewalk para sa mga vendors.”

The University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters who managed to get into the round of four in the Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) lost to the Ateneo Blue Eagles in their first outing. Then to San Beda Red Lions. But they went on to play and routed the San Sebastian Stags by 21 points. The stags earlier beat Ateneo who beat UC in the opener.

A Cebuano friend in Manila texted me that he didn’t like the alibi of the Stags coach in bowing to UC by a mile. He quoted the coach as saying they lost that much because the Stags didn’t exert much effort to save energy for the championship. My Cebuano friend’s message to the coach: “Saba diha!”

Going back to the city’s beautification program, which my friend Loy J. talked about, a Cebuano balikbayan wants to include in the program the ban on signs on the walls that say: “Do not urinate here” or “Gidili ang pagpangihi dinhi.” These signs, he says, give the foreign visitors the impression that Cebuanos urinate on walls like dogs.

I am about to complete another year on my feet. Thanks to Sir Dodong and Ma’am Nena Gullas. And my doctors Maning Lim and Butch Cabahug. Oh, yes, thank God most of all.
