PMS and menopause: October 13

PERSPECTIVE - Cherry Piquero Ballescas -

For all women near or over 40 years old, mark October 13th in your calendar and have a date with your spouse/partner and families and enjoy the World Menopausal Day celebration at the Ayala Center Cebu!?Registration starts at 5:30 am but the activity will start at 6:30 and will last up to 11:00 am

According to their press release, the Philippine Obstetrical and Gynecological Society, in cooperation with the Philippine Society of Climacteric Medicine, a component society of the International Menopause Society , will be celebrating the World Menopause Day, a global event observed during the whole month of October.

The theme of the celebration “Menopause: The Time of My Life,” aims to increase awareness among menopausal  and premenopausal women of the natural consequences during this important life event and how to maintain and improve their health.

PMS (or premenopausal syndrome) comes at various ages for women. What are the symptoms? Have you ever experienced the following: unexplained heart palpitations, extreme fear or fears (especially about separation and death), very volatile temper (annoyed or angry at just about anything even the insignificant), very emotional, with occasional memory lapses, hot flashes, or sensation of uneven body temperature, sleeplessness/insomnia, among others?

Have you also experienced going from one doctor to another, only to be told that you are normal and that nothing is wrong with you, despite the above list of body changes that you have been experiencing?

Do not worry. You are A-okay.

Your body clock is now signaling that you have entered another beautiful, meaningful phase of your womanhood. Do not allow the above sensations caused by your hormones now trying to adjust to this stage to control your life in fear and anxiety.

There are those who experience PMS but there are those who breeze through their middle and later lives without experiencing the inconveniences of hormonal imbalance during the PMS and the menopausal stage.

A number of women, however, have been so overwhelmed by this new stage in their lives that they experience mental stress, or sadly, even mental breakdown. If only PMS or menopause were explained to these women and to all women, there would be really no need to fear or be overwhelmed by these natural stages that women go through.

Women are not the only ones affected by PMS or menopause. Their hormonal and body changes affect their relationships as well with their partners and the rest of their families as well as others these PMS or menopausal women encounter through their days.

To better understand PMS and menopause and TO MORE EFFECTIVELY DEAL with this very crucial stage in every woman’s life, why don’t you treat yourselves and your other women friends, and for partners and children, why don’t you also accompany your wives and mothers to this October 13th event so you can together create a very supportive network and system for those experiencing PMS or menopause?

The October 13th event at Ayala Center will also offer free bone densitometry and blood sugar testing, to be followed by a free-wheeling discussion at Ayala Cinema where the public may ask their menopause concerns from a panel of experts which include Dr. Maricar Quevedo, national PSCM president, and Prof Julian Manalastas, UP Diliman Psychology professor and more.
