Let the law protecting brats be amended now

HAVE BAT WILL STRIKE - Juanito V. Jabat   -

If the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act is amended, those kids sniffing rugby could no longer do their thing in front of a cop and say: “Pikat!”

* * *

 Some cops have admitted that they could not arrest the little bastards even if they’re dared to because of the law that, in effect, protects the rights of these brats.

* * *

 Some years back I asked a policeman-friend why these dirty nosed kids were practically allowed to sniff rugby, my friend said: “Protectado sa balaud. Imong dakpon, kon demalason ka ikaw pang ikiha.”

* * *

 So that’s the reason why children as young as three years old are seen, until now, sniffing rugby in the open, unafraid, because there’s a law protecting them.

* * *

 If this law gets amended, those brats caught sniffing rugby could be arrested and tagged “juvenile criminals” if they belong to the group of “arrestable” minors. So let that law be amended now.

 E-mail from reader Rodrigo Yamsuan, a Cebuano in Manila: “There is a request for the US Embassy to be transferred to Cebu for the benefit of residents of Southern PHL applying for visa and other matters. Aren’t they referring to the US Consulate which handles visa matters? Cebu used to host this Consulate, I recall.”

 After third-runnerup Miss Philippines Shamcey Supsup got a high approval rating for her answer to the question posed to her, five former Pinay beauty queens were asked how they would answer the question thrown at Shamcey. The five took turns in trying to outdo Shamcey in answering the query.

 “Nindot ang ilang mga tubag,” said a reader who read the five ex-queens’ answers in Ricky Lo’s Philstar column. “Nindot gyud kay 48 oras gud silang nakatubag samtang si Shamcey pila ra ka segundos.”

 There is a move to teach students martial arts as part of their protection against hoodlums. This has long been proposed by Cebuano arnis and eskrima king Cacoy Cañete of Doce Pares. He tried to start it by giving instructions to some students for free. “Pero wa may suporta,” Cacoy told me.

If the students, especially the girls, could be taught even just the fundamentals of arnis or eskrima, those trying to hold them up using just knives could not make it to first base, so to speak.
