When tsunamis hit our lives, pray and flee

Early this morning I got this text message on my CP: “Be glad your prayers last night were answered:” Truth to tell, some were not and I’m glad they weren’t.

 Of course, I was glad that my most important prayer was answered. That I be given one more chance at life. And one more chance to be with you today.

 High Japanese officials were heard calling on the Japanese people (with English translation) to be strong and resilient in the face of the natural tragedy that hit Japan. No one ever said: “Let us pray.”

 In the Philippines, thousands of Pinoys would troop to prayer rallies when such tragedy — even the minor ones — happen. Our being strong and resilient we leave to God.

 Fr. Jerry Orbos, SVD, one of my favorite priests, said in his homily last Sunday that when earthquakes and tsunamis come to our lives in the form of temptations, we must pray and flee for our salvation. Worth bearing in mind.

 I was at Cebu Doc last week for my second bone scan. I struck an acquaintance with a retired nurse in the Nuclear Med waiting room. She was conversant about my health problem. “Sayang ano,” she said. “You no longer can do it, right?”

 “Wrong!” I said. She looked at me in the eyeballs, saying: “At 70 you still can do it? After the scraping of your...? Komedya diha. It’s now only your spirit that’s willing.”

 I want to tell her she was wrong about my age. But I left her uncorrected. If you’re 80 and someone mistakes you for being 70, reklamo pa ka? Ganansya ka na og 10 anyos. Hehe.

 I heard this news on radio: “Upat ka tiil nga tsunami ang niigo sa Japan.” Sometimes some news are better reported in English.
