Ukay-ukay shops drawing balikbayans, tourists

- The Ear -

UKAY-UKAY. Four Indonesian women who came to Cebu to attend a three-day conference spent the last day of their stay here visiting some ukay-ukay shops on the suggestion of their guide. “They had fun shopping, finding the second hand merchandise very cheap,” the guide said. “Gisuwayan ko lang daan ang upat sa mga ukay-ukayan, sus ni-enjoy man pangompra.”

ATTRACTION. The ukay-ukay shops here have become tourist attractions to balikbayans and now visitors from neighboring Asian cities. “There are no garment shops like this in Jakarta,” one of the Indon visitors told their guide. Branded or signature ladies bags priced at less than US$1 were the top sellers among the visitors.
