HAVE BAT WILL STRIKE - Juanito V. Jabat   -

I just read in a news item that Mayor Tom is so mad at Mary Ann that he said he wouldn't touch her with a 10-foot pole. Me, I would like to touch her even without a pole. Hehe.

I said to a doctor friend: "Doc, surgery has become too expensive." And I added: "Will there ever be a time when surgery would be easily reachable by the poor?" He said: "Yes, when surgery becomes self-help. You know, like what they do in self-service eateries."

I said: "Doc, you're kidding." And he replied: "Mr. Jabat, you were kidding, too."

A businessman who wagered an undetermined amount for Jojo Binay in the VP race won but didn't claim his winnings. His betting partner was, of all people, a priest.

"Wa ko nalang klima ang akong daug," said the businessman. "Giamot ko na lang sa iyang simbahan." About a week later, the businessman and his priest-friend met. The priest thanked him for his unintended donation. And added: "Pun-i to brad bi, gubaon kisame sa akong simbahan."

There's a baseball tournament going on in Manila with six teams competing -- Manila, Cebu, Alabang, Batangas, Taguig and Pampanga. As I write this, Cebu is running second to Manila with 2-1 win-loss card.

Good to know that there's an effort to revive bigtime baseball on a national level. Cebu was always in the thick of baseball activities before the war. During the Liberation, there was an attempt to revive baseball here but didn't prosper.

I recall baseball teams from different places in Cebu played on weekends in Punta Princesa -- on a wide vacant lot where the Lourdes Parish Church now stands. The games drew big enthusiastic crowds mostly made up of fans of the playing teams and old-time lovers of the sport.

I hope there will soon come a time when baseball will see an honest-to-goodness revival here.
