LOOKING ASKANCE - Joseph Gonzales -

Post-elections, and it's a good time to look at the political landscape.

Over at Congress, officials of Smartmatic, the billion peso-bidder that master-minded our very first automated elections, are being called sons-of-bitches by our venerable members of Congress. (Ouch!)

Over at private caucuses, the President-elect is cracking jokes at his hair's expense. Noynoy Aquino has said that his workload would be shared equally with his Vice-President, so that he (Noynoy) can keep the rest of his hair. (Ouch?)

Over by former Solicitor General Frank Chavez's corner, potshots are being hurled at The Firm Villaraza and Cruz. He is suspicious that more members of this lawfirm are going to be appointed into juicy posts by the President-elect.

Over at The Firm, a sober appeal has been aired to respect the privacy of the partners, specially who have no connection to public service. And incidentally, a reminder to the public about Chavez's unblemished record (referring not to his stellar reputation at winning cases, but reportedly, to a track record 'unblemished by victory.') Ouch!

Over at the Supreme Court, newly-appointed Chief Justice Renato Corona is boasting he is not beholden to President Arroyo, in whose Cabinet he served previously, and who signed his appointment papers despite protests by the academe, the pundits, and the public.

Over at the UP College of Law, the Dean is tapping out messages in his facebook account, questioning the new Chief Justice's assurances.

(Over by my corner, I just want to remind my readers that Corona was one of the dissenters in the Ladlad decision, as he said that Ladlad, as a gay political group, did not deserve to be given a shot at party list representation in Congress.)

Over at Ladlad's corner, Danton Remoto thanks the hundred thousand voters who cast their precious vote in the party's favor.

Over again at President-elect Aquino's corner, he has warned he will not recognize President Arroyo's appointment of Corona.

Over at the Phil. Daily Inquirer's corner, they have asked Aquino not to cause a constitutional crisis by refusing to recognize the new Chief Justice. Also, if he wants to take his oath as President, can he please be sworn in by anyone, so long as it's not by another Supreme Court Justice that's not Corona?

And still at the President-elect's corner, he has announced he will take his oath before another Supreme Court Justice, who is not Chief Justice Corona.

Over at the web, thousands of Filipinos are liking a new site dedicated to saying goodbye to President Arroyo, and manifesting this like by venting unladylike curses.

Over at the Palace, well, it's deserted. She has decided to splurge more taxpayers' money by going to Shanghai and catching what she can of the Expo. Natch, she will spend a few minutes at the pathetic Philippine booth designed to highlight how technologically backward we are, and stocked with hardly anything that Filipinos can be proud of (or so says our spy).Undoubtedly, she will spend more time marveling at the amazing booths prepared by more competent nations. (That is, if she ever makes it to the Expo at all. After all, there must be fabulous million-peso dinners waiting for her.).

But, not to worry, she has left behind a spokesperson! And over at his press-conference, he has dismissed the website, saying Filipinos are free to be as low and as stupid as they want to be.

Over at the Filipino corner, the Filipinos are being defended as hardly stupid, but in fact, enlightened at finally having discerned the fundamental nature of President Arroyo's failed presidency.

And finally, over at Congressman-elect Manny Pacquiao's corner, he has shown us he will best serve his constituents by giving them the very thing he was born to do - fight! Since he has agreed to a pre-fight blood test, there should be nothing to bar his much-anticipated bout with Floyd Mayweather.

And over at Sarangani, where Pacquiao has just won, who cares about the legislation that should be filed by their Representative in Congress? Why, surely, his boxing career's more important. They're all in his corner, that's for sure.

What matter who's in their's?
