The UV centenary

HAVE BAT WILL STRIKE - Juanito V. Jabat   -

Upon my return home from the hospital, I was met by a lot of mail matters on my desk ... Commercial promo materias, contribution solicitations, get-well soon cards from abroad, etc. The very first promo material I opened was addressed: Juanito Jabat. The handbill inside said: "Are you expecting your first baby?"

* * *

The handbill (actually a brochure) did not specify ... a bewborn baby or a teenage baby. A piece of advice to the uninitiated (?) .. Don't try babying a teenager. A newborn baby might follow.

A woman who sells and/or promotes a brand of herbal food supplement came to me to get me interested in her product. I was not interested but I asked her to leave her name and phone number. She smiled and said: "You're more interested in me than in my product. No?"

* * *

What she said didn't cross my mind. I was not interested in her nor in her product. I was interested, though, in how she got her name on her nameplate: "Ma. Magna Cum Laude." It's a long story and I have many more things to fill up this space with.

Edgar Ladrido asked in his email which was posted when I was still indisposed: "What do you think of the BOPK rule banning its candidates from taking part in political forms sponsored by radio stations? Me, I think it's unfair to the candidates and the electorate ..."

That's not what the party whips think. And what they think goes. The idea here, I think, is to to ensure that no one gets the mistake of saying things different from the party stand.

The University of the Visayas, founded in l9l9 by Don Vicente Gullas, will celebrate its centennial in 20l9. That's still a good nine years away. But preparations for this historic event are now afoot.

* * *

Don Vicente Gullas founded the Visayan Institute (now the famous UV) in 1919 with only 58 students holding classes in a rented house. He was the principal, treasurer, teacher and janitor rolled into one. It was with the inspiration of Inday Pining Rivera Gullas that Don Vicente managed to push up UV to where it is now.

* * *

The present UV administrators have devised plans to make sure that the University's centennial celebration will be something that Visayanians -- and in fact all Cebuanos -- will remember and cherish for a long, long time.
