Battering 2009 in New York

HAVE BAT WILL STRIKE - Juanito V. Jabat   -

A former military general complains about character assassination now that he's running for an elective post. He should've been forewarned about what Winston Churchill once said: "Politics is more dangerous than war, for in war you are only killed once."

There is a saying that goes: "Silence is golden." And there's gold in silence. If the gold here means fortune, look at this mistress of a multi-millionaire sportsman. Reports say she was paid millions of dollars to keep silent.

Two powerful firecrackers have been developed in Bulacan. They're called: "Goodbye Gloria" and "Ampatuan." Both are so powerful they can make a crater on the ground bigger than a backhoe can.

It rained on New Year's Eve. Explosion of firecrackers were minimized. It was Mother Nature who did it, not the Mayor nor the cops.

The Catholic Bishops are telling us that the election in May is our chance to cleanse the government of corrupt officials and personnel. Let's not let this chance pass us by. A chance like this knocks only once in six years.

Shortly before last New Year's Eve thousands of New Yorkers gathered at the Times Square to mark Good Riddance Day. They did everything symbolic of their desire to drive away the "evils" of 2009.

People tore and shredded newspaper pages with stories about the ills of 2009 like the economic crisis, the killings, etc. Two Cebuanos living in New York took part in this different kind of "people power."

Leilani Oduna (a nurse) and Nancy Sanchez (an x-ray tech) said in a joint e-mail that they tore pages of the New York Post carrying stories about natural calamities that hit RP in 2009. "Nanghinaut mi nga dili ni masubli (ang kalamidad) sa tuig 2010," said Leilani.

Leilani and Nancy said it was fun. Everyone was taking digs at 2009 and welcoming 2010 with hope. They said they hoped to introduce Good Riddance Day in Cebu.
