Georgia: No easy cookie to crack

HAVE BAT WILL STRIKE - Juanito V. Jabat   -

Georgia Osmeña is running for city mayor. Tom O should not underestimate her. She's no longer his baby sister.

My friend Teddy H. says: "Georgia is no easy cookie to crack ... Have you ever heard of an Osmeña losing in a major political battle in the city?"

* * *

"You don't know this but I know that the BOPK is no longer whole. It has been split down the middle," claims Teddy who knows city politics more than I do. "The split came after Tom O endorsed Mike Rama as mayoralty candidate."

* * *

How come? I wanted know. "By golly," he said, "journalist man ta ka, wa kay kalibutan? Daghang barangay kapitan nga sakop sa BOPK ang mibuwag ... Naa say mga tawo mismo ni Tom O diha sa city hall nikuyog sa split." This splitup, he said, is a big boost for Georgia's candidacy.

That's why I said not long ago, and I say it again, that my friend Mike should work hard because beating Georgia is no walk in the park. She's an underdog at this point in time, but you know it's often said that underdogs have their day.

Look, I'm not batting for Georgia O. I’m just saying, like what many political observers are saying, that this youngest daughter of Serging has got what it takes to give Mike Rama a run for his money, so to speak.

Some columns back I toyed around with the idea that since the GMA camp doesn't have a presidential bet strong enough to give the opposition's Noynoy Aquino a good fight, why don't they find a way to woo survey leader Manny Villar to their side? Yes, make him their presidential standard bearer?

"Crazy idea" a fellow mediaman said. You must have read in the papers that this idea, crazy though it may seem to my colleague, coincides with the idea of certain admin bigwigs who have thought of this as a desperation move. Of course, it was shot down cold.

E-mail from Dan Luisito, a Cebuano in Kuwait: "There are many Pinoys in Kuwait who are itching to vote in the 20l0 elections as absentee voters. But unlike in the last elections no candidate seems have started campaigning here ...

There are about half a million OFWs here and they are all qualified voters. Otherwise they wouldn’t have been allowed to come here if they're minors.
