What's gonna happen if private schools close down?

HAVE BAT WILL STRIKE - Juanito V. Jabat   -

Everyone seems to be talking green things these days. In the name of the environment. Green this, green that. But everyone is frowning on green jokes.

The first city mayor I know who encouraged Cebuanos to go green, especially in their diet, is my compadre Dodong Solon, a top-level nutritionist. He even had the city hospital painted green.

One “Text Views” contributor wanted me to write my column everyday (TF, June 26). Hehe! I’m tickled green, er, pink. But like one distinguised writer friend (a former TF columnist and university professor) who once said: “I want to write daily but I’m not intelligent everyday.” I say ditto.

A veteran Pinoy seaman who has been out of the sea for two years laments that his job application was rejected in favor of a fresh nautical graduate. Di puwede, long time no sea?

* * *

A woman who earns a living by piercing ears for earrings, has been nabbed for “illegal practice.” Illegal? Di ba, to earn is human?

My two big bosses — Sir Dodong and Sir Miguel — didn’t forget me on the feast day of St. John the Baptist. Thank you, Sirs, for remembering this Juan.

Mayor Tom O is running for congressman in the South District. Many are saying victory is in the bag for Tom. Jonathan Guardo a sure loser? The late sportswriter and one of my best friends Lando “Orlacsan” Sanchez used to tell me: “Do not be sure of the man in the mango tree.”

E-mail from Ahmed Siscar: “Because one of its employees was suspected to have died from the swine flu, the entire Batasan House of Representatives was closed down. I don’t think it’s right. But who cares whether I’m right or wrong? I have only one vote.”

 “What do you think would happen if all the private colleges and universities would close down?” someone asked me. “I don’t exactly know,” I said. “But could the government provide good tertiary education to the millions of students left without private campuses?”

* * *

The government could hardly even give primary and intermediate pupils enough classrooms, enough chairs, enough desks, etc. How could it handle what the private schools are handling? Oh, well, I could be wrong. Correct me if I am.
