Top lawyers in concert / Coyiutos' Visayan tour / Grupo Reposo Arts Fest

For the first time, legal luminaries will showcase their musical talent on May 22, 7 p.m., at Philamlife Theater to prove their grounding in the humanities and refined sensibilities. The concert was conceptualized as a fundraiser for LAWASIA, an eminent group of lawyers, judges and bar associations led by Raul Goco and Raul Angangco. Dolly Español, PEZA Dir.-Gen. Lilia de Lima and pianist-lawyer Avelino Cruz are giving their support.

Performers are Marivic Benedicto, Karina Liggayu, CA Justice Magdangal de Leon, DOT Usec. Oscar Palabyab, Ronnie Reyes, Ireneo Llorin, Jr. Zorayda Andam, Joey Lina, IC Marcelino Libanan Jr., Antonio Pastor, Dot Gancayco, Mike Toledo, Mario Andres and Catherine Manahan, Victor Africa, Homer Mendoza, Nick Nangit, the Charivari choir under Divinagracia San Juan. Guest artists are sopranos Donna Marquinez and Elaine Lee. Pianist Jude Areopagita is assisting artist in pop, jazz, Broadway, classic and Filipino numbers.

Acclaimed pianist Cristine Coyiuto and daughter Caitlin Alisa, brilliant 14-year old flutist, will tour Bacolod, Cebu and Dumaguete on June 24, 26 and 28, respectively.

Cristine will play Haydn’s whimsical Capriccio in G Major and ten lyrical pieces from Mendelssohn’s Songs Without Words.

Caitlin will join Cristine in Cecile Chaminade’s Flute Concertino and Claude Bolling’s Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano Trio, with Joji Magadia (bass) and Horhe San Jose (drums) assisting. The technically demanding Chaminade Concertino is well-loved. The Bolling Suite, representating a great musical movement, fuses jazz and classic, and topped the Billboard chart for 10 years.

Trained in NY’s Juilliard School, Cristine, a leading pianist, has been described as “The Pianists’ Pianist” and “Poetess of the Piano”. Caitlin, who studied with Tony Maigue, was the youngest master class student of Vincent Lucas, principal flutist of the Paris Orchestra, Davide Formisano, principal flutist of Teatro Alla Scala, Mathieu Dufour, principal flutist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and Japanese-French flutist Yuko Dalancon. Caitlin has garnered high praise.

Grupo Reposo, the NCCA, the LRI Design Center and Ricco Renzo Galleries will present Mahalin Sariling Sining, a visual arts fest May 29-31. Grupo Reposo is composed of business establishments on Reposo St. (now Nicanor Garcia St.). Its president Eduardo Soler says “Its mission is to promote the said strip as the premier destination for the visual, performing and culinary arts.”

The arts fest venue, which houses art galleries, furniture showrooms, interior and fashion design studios, restaurants and French language classrooms is one of its kind.

On May 29, the Pagalingan Pinay exhibit with Mayor Binay and Health Secretary Duque as guests, will choose three grand winners. Judges are Rep. Juan Edgardo Angara, Health Secretary Duque, art critics Alice Guillermo and Cid Reyes, artists Sanso, Susan Fetalvero Roces, Phyllis Zaballero and Julie Lluch.

In Pulong Sining, 25 well-known modern artists representing A.R.I.A.S. — Gallery Astra, Gallery BIG and Ricco Renzo Gallery — will display their works and discuss the theme “Where Is Philippine Visual Art Headed?” from 12 noon to 8 p.m. Alliance Francaise will hold French art discussions and present free movies May 30 and 31.

Alamin Mo! Consists of free art lectures, seminars and workshops for children conducted by experts. Masaya Mag Pinta I on May 30 is an art workshop for children ages 5-8. Masaya Mag Pinta II is for 24 children ages 9-12, 3-4 p.m. Ating Sining I, 5-7 p.m. is a Modern Art Seminar to be conducted by Cid Reyes. (Maximum of 40 participants.)

On May 31, the seminar Ang Talino ni Aguilar Alcuaz, 2-4 p.m., will be hosted by his son Christian.
