Five-year curriculum for nursing students

READER'S VIEWS - Larra N. Patindol -

The five-year Nursing course, altogether is not entirely a bad idea, but it has its good share of pros and cons.

Let's look at its good side first. Hopefully the extended course will help produce better nurses. Nurses that are ready for the tough job ahead. Nurses who will give the tender loving care they are expected to give. Nurses that are globally competitive. Who can ask anything more. A well laid out five years Nursing curriculum will definitely be less taxing and stressful to students as opposed to the cramped up course that sometimes don't even allow a summer vacation for nursing students.

Now let's look at the bad side of this issue. First and foremost is economics. This course is going to be a lot more expensive, longer time and no assurance that an extended course would help produce better nurses. It will depend on several factors, namely: The quality of the students, the quality of the school and the facilities provided for the students.

Most of all, it would take more than the lectures in related learning experience to make a really good nurse. It would require genuine dedication and the right attitude to be a Florence Nightingale.

Obviously, it would take longer for the students to start earning. Another year before the parents can recoup their expenses.
