EDITORIAL - Time to seize the bull by the horn
Talisay City Mayor Socrates Fernandez should do something about his son Joavan. At the rate he is causing trouble, it would not surprise anybody in that fledgling city if other people will do something about the problem on their own.
Mayor Fernandez was elected to his post not because of wealth or political savvy. He was elected because the people of Talisay saw in him the good qualities that only a God-fearing man can be expected to possess.
As one of the leading lights of the Catholic Faith Defenders prior to becoming mayor, Fernandez was known to have memorized the Bible by heart. Such internalization is not expected to fly out the window just because he now finds himself in a different field of endeavor.
Thus it is expected of him to still remember how Abraham, in painful obedience to God, was forced to prepare his son for sacrifice, until God himself stopped him. It may be a very difficult decision, but Mayor Fernandez finds himself in precisely the same situation.

Actually, there are others who could rein in Joavan. In this topsy-turvy world of perverted morals and corrupted souls, there is no dearth in the number of people who would be more than willing to do the mayor’s dirty work for him.
But maybe these people still look up to the mayor with respect. Maybe they are bowing to him in deference, waiting for him to take the initiative, since at the end of the day, it is still a problem involving a father and a son.
But the mayor must realize no one can wait forever. If God can hold his temper, ordinary people can’t. Patience can wear very thin. That Mayor Fernandez loves his son is without doubt. But that love must end where his love for God begins. And God is waiting to be shown.
