EDITORIAL - Spiritual cleansing

-

For millions across Christendom, today marks one of the grandest religious celebrations in the world. Easter Sunday highlights the resurrection of Jesus Christ following His death at the hands of Roman soldiers.

After Christmas, there’s no other day for Christians as important as the one when Christ rose from the dead. The great happening that they celebrate today only signifies how God so loved the world that He even sacrificed His only begotten son to save man from sin.

The celebration of Easter Sunday today comes in the wake of another political upheaval sweeping across the Philippines. But being one of the world’s largest Christian nations, the country can still have the means to uphold its reputation as the vanguard of the Christian faith in a religiously and culturally diverse Asia.

But first, Filipinos must need soul-searching. They should take the opportunity today to examine how they fare well in their daily Christian routine, how their Christian way of life molded them as a nation.

With all the political squabbling, Filipinos should look into where the nation has been sailing as far as the Christian doctrines are concerned. Today, the way the recent developments have been affecting the nation, Filipinos seemed to have lost the moral virtues they have long been embraced in their Christian lives.

The fact that the country’s political leaders cannot find remedy for their constant bickering only means the national leadership has lost the virtue of unanimity underscored by Christian teachings, and has become morally bankrupt.

With corruption stunting Filipinos’ eventual rise from poverty, morality has ceased to be the name of the game for those who lead them. And it is no longer surprising that the Philippines continued to lord it over the list of the most corrupt countries in the world.

As the nation marks the resurrection of Christ this Easter Sunday, it is better for Filipinos to reexamine the message His death has brought to humankind. God had sent his Son to the world so man has light to follow in a world overshadowed by iniquity and wickedness.

What Filipinos should need today is spiritual renewal to trigger a moral revolution in this country long stricken by poverty brought about by the seemingly never-ending political animosities.
