Love Month
The 2nd week of the New Year is here. One month gone, a new one has started. Where January is met with some anxiety, being the first month of a new year, February is warmly more welcomed, being perceived as the season of love.
Perhaps love can be directed to love for nature, love for the environment starting this month this year?
"Walay plastikan," we heard colleague Leo Lastimosa say over the radio yesterday morning. Then he proceeded to inform his listeners about how the use of plastics translates into more need of imported oil. I did not catch the earlier portion of his discussion but Leo must have been echoing the campaign of the environmental group ECOWASTE Coalition to encourage people "to bring your own bayong when shopping so as to help the country save on imported oil."
According to a statement of Gigie Cruz of ECOWASTE reported in the news, some 430,000 gallons of oil are used up to produce 100 million plastic bags. A study by Worldwatch Institute noted that of
Hence, we join ECOWASTE and Leo who are advocating and campaigning for "Way Plastikan!" Show your love for yourself, for Mother Nature, for a sustainable earth, for the next generations as well – stop using plastic!
Let's start by bringing our own non-plastic bag to shop and to the market. We can refuse to use the plastic bags offered in stores and malls and perhaps we can request for paper cartons instead?
Business establishments that use eco-friendly alternatives to plastics should be given incentives, like eco-tax credits, by government since government, in turn, will save from less costs to damage caused by plastic trash. Remember how much floods are caused by clogged plastics in the trash?

February 24-25, there is a plan open to all interested to visit Alegria, to speak with the stakeholders and to try to do dolphin-watching if weather permits. If not feasible, there is a plan to explore the lake, waterfalls, caves and other "nature treats in the area," as per Jane Petralba, the Provincial Prosecutor from Alegria.
Let February be a month of love for nature. Show your love for the environment!
