Environmentalist one of Gusi Peace Prize awardees

The Gusi Peace Prize is a non-stock, non-profit foundation whose main objective is to give appropriate recognition through the conferment of awards of excellence and distinction to individuals or groups worldwide who have distinguished themselves as shining examples of society, exhibited respect for human life and dignity, or who have contributed towards the attainment of peace. The Gusi Peace Prize’s roots go back many decades ago. Capt. Gemeniano Javier Gusi was a World War II guerilla who fought against Japanese oppression, turned politician and became known for his advocacy for human rights.

Supported by his loving wife, Madame Teodora Sotejo Gusi, they undertook many charity works, helping the poor, deprived and humiliated individuals in society throughout the country. Eventually, Barry Sotejo Gusi took over from what his parents started, creating the Gusi Peace Prize. It was established through the support of the Gusi, Groschell, Ressler and Isenhardt brothers from Germany and the Gusi Peace Prize Philippine Committee composed of friends of the Gusi family who share the same mission and vision. The Gusi Peace Prize is Asia’s equivalent of the Nobel Peace Prize.

This year, the awarding ceremonies will be held at the Meralco Theater, Pasig City tomorrow, November 21, and will have no less than President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as guest of honor and speaker. Three Filipinos are included in the list of awardees. They are Chief Public Attorney Persida V. Rueda-Acosta, who will be cited for social justice and underscoring the rule of law; Presidential Anti-Graft Commission (PAGC) chairperson Constancia de Guzman, who is being recognized for her efforts in fighting graft and corruption in government; and former Senator Heherson Alvarez, who will be honored for his visionary leadership and commitment in protecting the environment and his persistent and courageous struggle to restore Philippine democracy, modernizing its economy and advancing social justice.

Among the three awardees, however, it is Heherson Alvarez who stands out for his exemplary feats. He has been dubbed the Al Gore of the Philippines for his environmental advocacies and his crusade against global warming and climate change. He has upheld various noble causes throughout his long, illustrious career, risking life, honor and family. He never wavered in the struggle for freedom and good governance and in upholding the underclass over vested interests. He is an exceptional leader in time of danger and peace. For 21 years, serving as Senator, Congressman, Agrarian Reform, Environment and Natural Resources Secretary; founding chairman of the Philippines Earthsavers Movement; Alvarez has been a consistent, influential voice, building regional and global awareness on the awesome impact of climate change and global warming.

Our country needs more outstanding men and women like Alvarez, Acosta and De Guzman who can come forth and provide President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo a helping hand in her efforts to lead our country to greatness. The Gusi Peace Prize should serve as an inspiration for our leaders to set aside selfish political ambitions, and concentrate on solving the many problems our country is now facing.
