Letter to the Editor — Election is a reflection of the Filipino culture
The PNP proudly pronounced it as one of the most peaceful elections in history. What? With more than 100 men dead? Maybe the "bar" was too low, they should raise it a bit higher next time.
Chiz Escudero… for being number 2, he started as number 1.
He packaged himself very well even before the campaign started. As Congressman and Spokesperson of the opposition, he was very critical on issues yet maintaining his boyish look, he was very articulate, he spoke straight Tagalog (never in English), he attacked the issues-not the person. Escudero is very youthful. And he made a very appealing advertisement on TV.
Antonio Trillanes… on being consistently included in the Magic 12.
What a surprise! Everyone is flat footed. He had the least media exposure, he couldn't go out of prison to campaign (unlike Gringo Honasan), he doesn't have posters, his advertisement on tv appeared several times only. What a pleasant surprise indeed! What were the voters thinking when they wrote his name? That to be Senator, all you have to do is lead a revolt? We only knew him from the Oakwood Mutiny. That's the only "qualification" attached to his name. We don't even know his educational background, his civic involvement, what kind of person he is - except for leading a revolt in
Now Prospero Pichay, Chavit Singson and Migz Zubiri can make a conclusion that colorful posters and so much ads on tv don't work anymore. With the Trillanes Fever, let's see if Jun Ducat (the hostage taker of 1-bus load of kids will run next election.)
Tessie Aquino… for not winning.
Filipinos don't forget. They may forgive, but they don't forget. They remember Trillanes from three years ago. They also remember Tessie from seven years ago for being the "Dancing Queen" of the Impeachment Trial. Tessie's public apology aired almost everyday on tv was futile.
Gringo Honasan…
Fresh from prison. With him and Trillanes enjoying the Magic 12 seats, it is confirmed that Filipinos prefer rebellious men in uniform than handsome actors like…
Richard Gomez and Cesar Montano…
Oh my. Thanks to frequent elections even if it drains the national budget, at least Filipino voters have now learned one way or another. They have raised their own "bar."
Ralph Recto…
I'm a bit surprised he's not in the Magic 12. His ads appeared very frequent on tv. He was endorsed by his showbiz family (like how the Pangilinan family endorsed Kiko). He has no record of corruption. Is this because he appears only during election time? Once elected, he's never heard of anymore. He's not critical on government issues.
Which indeed means, the Filipino voters have now reached a certain point of maturity. Wow. Popular names like Recto, Magsaysay, and Osmeña don't buy anymore. Maybe they should lead a revolt first.
Manny Pacquiao…
It took a petite female boxer in the name of Darlene Custodio to knock out the unstoppable Pacman. Imagine that, in his next boxing in
Election in the
Let's face it, we only have two choices: Democracy and Martial Law. Parliamentary form of government is unacceptable nationwide, Filipinos feel it's a threat, it goes with a lot of doubts. I personally want a Parliamentary form of government but the country doesn't. We're not ready for it. Most of Filipinos do not understand what it is all about. And they refuse to understand. They love elections, it's fiesta time for them. It's the time they are valued by those sitting in power. It's the time masses become important. So there's nothing we can do but be a Filipino. And the choice is only between Democracy and Martial Law. We chose Democracy. So Election is here to stay. And let's just view it the other way around, let's view it as a reflection of the Filipino culture. You would know the different kinds of Filipinos from who they voted for. If they voted wisely, congratulations to them. If they voted otherwise, oh well, they deserve it.
Come on, let's cry and celebrate that we are Filipinos. I am a proud Filipino.
