A rare breed of politician

HAVE BAT WILL STRIKE - Juanito V. Jabat   -
A candidate for city councilor says one of his plans if elected is to author an ordinance that would outlaw the act of frowning (kusmod) in public places. Funny but I think we need that in these times of economic difficulty.

This candidate says: "I want our city to be inhabited by people with happy faces." He was looking at an unsmiling photo of the mayor when he said it.

General Santos City Congresswoman Darlene Antonino Custodio is a rare breed of politician. Your never heard her speak ill of her political rival Manny Pacquiao. She cheered him during his fight against Jorge Solis. She gave him a welcome kiss and hug on his arrival back home in Gensan. Could Pacman afford to fight such a sweet and harmless lady like Darlene?

Many political observers are saying that Manny Pacquiao was just shoved into the political arena by politicos who want to get rid of Congresswoman Custodio. Because they feel only Pacquiao could dislodge Custodio from her Congress seat, they used him. Doesn''t Manny feel he''s being made a sucker by political power brokers?

The massacre of the 32 students of Virginia Tech in Virginia, USA, by a single gunman should be a wake-up call for our school administrators in Cebu. Security must be tight at every entrance of our schools. Never mind if there are people who''d complain about the strictness. For all we know one of them could be a gunman!

Oh, yes, school security guards must be strict. But this strictness must be devoid of arrogance and high-handedness that could create animosity between the students and visitors on one hand and the officials of the school on the other.

Art Abregonde, a Cebu City council aspirant (North) in the ticket of mayoral candidate Mary Ann delos Santos and vice mayoral bet Raymund Garcia, dropped by my office last Wednesday. Art briefed me on what he''ll do if elected. And also on the chances of the De lso Santos-Garcia tandem at the polls.

"Ang mga tawo gusto na gyod og kausaban ... Kon makakita ka lang sa mga tawo nga mo-abiba ug mohangop nilang Mary Ann ug Raymund, makaingon ka nga hapit na maato ang gipangayong kausaban," Abregonde said with the familiar smile that has been his trademark.

A sad news has just hit the local journalism community. Danny M. Gonzales, a well-known newspaperman/radioman in Cebu in the 60s and 70s passed away in the US a few days ago. A sketchy report on Danny''s death came from Maning Satorre Jr., another well-known journalism personality in Cebu who is now residing in Los Angeles. Condolence to Danny''s wife Teresita and children. Please pray for the eternal rest of Danny''s soul.
