EDITORIAL - Let us change with a positive outlook

-
An opinion columnist in a leading national daily is so personally deep into initiatives to change the present presidential form of government to a parliamentary one that she minces no words in insulting those who do not see things her way.

The columnist suggested a few days ago that only those who are "politically literate" would tend to agree with her views that there is indeed a need to made the switch and that those who disagree with her are, well, "politically illiterate."

The temptation is great, of course, to take the columnist up on that observation, but that would give too much dignity to someone who does not deserve any, based on her embarrassingly flawed arguments for a parliamentary form of government.

According to this columnist, the parliamentary form of government is better than the presidential because it is far easier to remove a prime minister than a president. For someone who unabashedly claims too much erudition that can be satisfactorily proven, this is horrible.

So, the ease with which a leader, regardless of whether that leader is a president or a prime minister, can be removed from office is now a leading factor on why a country of 87 million people need to shift from a presidential form of government to a parliamentary one.

We say such an argument is very horrible because it is so negative. We have not even gone through the motions of making the shift, and here we are, talking about the ease with which we can remove a leader.

For God's sake, why talk of removing a leader when the better topic would have been how to make a leader stronger in order to lead this country farther on the road to progress than it has ever been.

Talk of removing a leader is so defeatist. It already underscores the element of failure even before we have started. It is like discussing at the starting line how a runner should be buried in case he dies of heart attack during the race.

Such talk and such notion have no place in any discussion about how to make things work out better for this country. We do not favor a shift because we do not believe the fault lies with the system. But if we have to change, at least let us change with a more positive outlook.
