Letter to the Editor - Peeping Tom
August 31, 2005 | 12:00am
The arguments against installation of "Peeping Tom" technology by Alejandro Alonzo and Edgardo Labella is understood but is not valid in today's world that has been defined by terrorists. They apparently don't understand that terrorist don't care about anyone's "rights". The terrorist's task is to successfully complete a mission regardless of the cost in human life. Because of this, we are forced to give up some of our "rights" as one of the ways that we can counter terrorists.
What's the big deal about our "private parts" being exposed by the Peeping Tom technology? That is a very small price to pay in order to help keep us safe from terrorists. Don't forget that Americans gave up many "rights/freedoms" after 9-11. Our whole world has changed since the 9-11 event and it will never be the same again. We all must give up some of our "rights/freedoms".
There is an alternative to the Peeping Tom technology; that is, everyone must submit to a 100 percent strip search prior to entering an airport terminal and again prior to boarding the aircraft. That will accomplish the same thing as the Peeping Tom technology at a greatly reduced cost. Of course the least expensive anti-terrorist thing to do is to do nothing at all. In fact, we could remove all existing technology, security personnel, etc. and hang out a welcome sign that welcomes all terrorists: That they can do whatever they would like. That way we are not "intruding" on anyone's rights, especially those of the terrorists to move about freely with concealed weapons, etc.
