Susan Roces, a lady and embodiment of wisdom

As we all know, Susan Roces is the screen name of Jesusa Sonora. We have known her for a long time and we have always admired her comportment on/off the screen. As we all know, it was her late husband Fernando Poe Jr. who ran against incumbent President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in the last elections.

Now, there is a lot of hysteria about the so-called master tape in Samuel Ong’s possession and the most sober reaction that we have noted has come from Susan Roces. You can see that she has only the best interest of the country in her mind. On the move to force President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to resign, she took the stand, "Let us not add to the problems of the country." During the wake of Fernando Poe Jr., many of her husband’s die-hard followers wanted to demonstrate against the administration. She put a stop to the movement by informing the crowd that there was a time to mourn and a time for politics.

This is what we badly need in the present – sobriety. Like Susan Roces, all we ask is that everything we do must be according to law and what is good for the country.

I have not heard the contents of the tape in Samuel Ong’s possession. But any reaction anyone takes after hearing the tape must be for the greater glory of the nation. And in the case of Susan Roces, everything she has said and done has that consistency – it was for the good of the people. We are sure that Susan Roces believes that her husband won the last elections. But she also knows that whatever the true results was is now totally academic. The best thing we can all do is preserve peace and order and work for justice for all.

We are glad that there are actresses like Susan Roces who are giving the movie world an excellent image. Another actress who is associated with helping people and the nation is Rosa Rosal. By coincidence, her name is also associated with the Rose flower. So we say Roces yata yan!

Our times call for calmness and sobriety and when the example is set by persons who are involved in the controversy, then it is truly meaningful. The last thing we need is another EDSA. That would reduce our democratic nation to a banana republic, or even worst a camote republic. We have many problems. Our task should be, first and foremost, to reduce poverty in the country. This means creating more jobs and building homes for the homeless.

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is our legitimate president. She should not be subjected to unsubstantiated charges. If there is cause to have her impeached, it should be presented in court. The way we see things she is doing quite well. We must remember that she did not create the problems we are facing. She inherited them from past administrations. She needs and deserves our utmost support.
