22 Philippine seafarers back after missile attack in Ukraine
MANILA, Philippines — Twenty-two Filipino seafarers arrived in Manila on Sunday after being repatriated from Ukraine following a missile attack on their vessel while it was berthed at the port of Chornomorsk.
The seafarers flew in on a Turkish Airlines flight at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3, where they were received by Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) officer-in-charge Assistant Secretary for sea-based OFW concerns Augusto San Diego III.
The Filipinos were part of the crew of the Liberia-flagged bulk carrier M/V Antonia S, which was struck by a missile on Aug. 19 while docked at Chornomorsk port in Ukraine.
Meanwhile, 92 distressed OFWs received financial assistance from the DMW during the “Parangal sa Bagong Bayani ng Mundo” gathering on Monday as part of the observance of National Heroes Day.
Of the 92 beneficiaries, 86 received P50,000 each. Six OFWs requiring medical aid were given P75,000 each.
