Consunji Group plans oil palm expansion

From AB Capital's The Opening Bell: Three Moves
Event
The Consunji Group plans to expand its oil palm plantation to approximately 20,000 hectares, significantly increasing its agricultural footprint.
View
We view the announcement as incrementally positive for DMCI Holdings, Inc., although the impact is unlikely to be felt in the near term. Oil palm plantations typically require several years before reaching peak production, meaning earnings contribution will be back-end loaded. More importantly, the move demonstrates management's disciplined capital allocation by investing in businesses with tangible assets and recurring cash flow potential. While agriculture is unlikely to rival the earnings contribution of Semirara or DMCI Homes, it provides another avenue for diversification and reduces reliance on more cyclical businesses over time.
Catalyst
The expansion signals management's intention to build a larger, more diversified earnings base beyond its core businesses of coal, power, construction and real estate. With global edible oil demand expected to remain structurally supported by population growth and food consumption, a larger plantation could become a meaningful long-term contributor once mature.
Action
We see this as a long-term strategic positive rather than a near-term earnings catalyst. Investors should continue to focus on coal prices, power generation, construction margins and property sales as the primary drivers of DMC's valuation, while viewing the oil palm expansion as a free long-term option that could add value as the plantations mature.
