BATANGAS, Philippines — Thirty-two people including minors were rescued after their motorized boat capsized in the waters off Calatagan, Batangas on Thursday.

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG)-District Southern Tagalog said that strong winds and waves battered the vessel as it was headed to Calatagan from Balayan town.

The waves destroyed a part of the boat, causing seawater to seep in until the vessel capsized.

Members of a local rescue team and fishermen rescued the passengers and crewmembers of the vessel.

The survivors were brought to the municipal disaster risk reduction and management office in Balayan for medical assessment.

Initial investigation showed that the vessel was originally used for fishing and had been converted for tourism purposes.

Probers said the boat sailed without clearance from authorities.

The boat operator will be charged for violating maritime safety, the PCG said as it warned the public against riding unauthorized vessels.
