MANILA, Philippines — The Presidential Task Force on Media Security condemned the attempted killing of Roxas City-based radio broadcaster Jay Lavapiez, who survived an early morning ambush.

In a statement Monday, June 22, the media security task force called the attack a "cowardly" act and said it is investigating the incident in coordination with the Philippine National Police.

"We condemn all acts of violence and intimidation against journalists and assert that such actions have no place in a democratic society," PTFOMS said.

"We stand in solidarity with Mr. Lavapiez and all media professionals, reaffirming our commitment to safeguarding their rights and security. The freedom of the press is essential to our democracy, and we will continue to advocate for measures that protect those who strive to uphold this freedom every day," it added.

Ambush in Roxas City

Lavapiez was driving along a national highway in Barangay Cagay, Roxas City, at around 5 a.m. on his way to his radio station when the attack happened, according to reports cited by PTFOMS.

At least two suspects on a motorcycle allegedly blocked his vehicle and opened fire.

Lavapiez survived the ambush. Investigators later recovered four spent bullet shells at the scene.

Police probe ordered. PTFOMS said Police Brig. Gen. Randulf Tuano, director of the Police Regional Office 6, has ordered local police units to take immediate action.

The task force said it would continue coordinating with police as the investigation proceeds.
