Power co-op intensifies fight vs electricity theft
MANILA, Philippines — A power utility in Zamboanga City is offering cash incentives for anyone who can help expose illegal power connections.
The Zamboanga City Electric Cooperative Inc. (Zamcelco) vowed to intensify legal actions against power pilferers.
“We urge the public to report any incident of theft as acts of electricity pilferage contribute directly to system losses, which affect all members of the power cooperative,” Zamcelco general manager Gannumede Tiu said.
People who can provide verified reports of power theft will receive cash incentives of up to P5,000, Tiu said.
The Zamcelco said a case was recently filed against the owner of a major establishment in the city for illegal power tapping.
Republic Act 7832 imposes prison terms and a fine of P20,000 or both on any person found pilfering electricity.
