New NBI chief vows reforms to curb corruption, bias

MANILA, Philippines —Newly appointed National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) chief Angelito Magno yesterday vowed to enforce internal reforms within the agency to eliminate corruption, bias and misconduct among its personnel.
Magno, who officially took over the post following the resignation of Jaime Santiago, said ensuring accountability would be his top priority as he begins instituting “moral reforms” within the bureau.
“This is a big challenge because our agency has existed for a long time, and today’s environment brings many temptations,” Magno said.
“We will start with accountability. If someone commits a wrongdoing, they must face the consequences. If an allegation is proven true, we will follow due process, not just transfer the person, and make sure others won’t follow their example,” he added.
He said the NBI’s Internal Affairs Division is actively investigating alleged irregularities within the agency, while the Counter-Intelligence Division also monitors the conduct of NBI personnel in the field.
