Yap pleads not guilty in Sotto’s cyberlibel rap

Mark Ernest Villeza - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Filmmaker Darryl Yap yesterday pleaded not guilty to cyberlibel charges filed against him by actor Vic Sotto over the teaser of his movie “The Rapists of Pepsi Paloma.”

“There’s always room for settlement and for parties to reconcile,” Yap’s lawyer Raymond Fortun said. “What’s important is the willingness of both sides to restore what was once peaceful.”

Sotto’s initial directive was to proceed with the trial, “but we have yet to ask him again whether he’s open to an amicable settlement,” the actor’s lawyer, Enrique de la Cruz, said.

Sotto sued Yap after the film’s teaser claimed that he assaulted the late 1980s actress.

The Muntinlupa Regional Trial Court held a pre-trial conference after Yap’s arraignment, in which parties agreed on certain facts and disclosed evidence to be presented.

Mandatory mediation will be held on Aug. 19.
