Measles cases surge in Quezon City

MANILA, Philippines — The Quezon City government has reminded parents to have their children vaccinated against measles following a surge in cases in the first quarter of the year.

As of April 7, the city had recorded 135 measles cases, up by over 300 percent from only 30 cases in same period in 2024.

Most of the measles cases – 118 – were children aged 10 years and below.

According to the city government, about 60 percent of the cases have not been immunized or have not completed their doses of the vaccine against measles.

“Measles is dangerous, but preventable through proper vaccination and care. Do not ignore the symptoms and consult a doctor if necessary,” the Quezon City Epidemiology and Surveillance Division (QCESD) said in an advisory.

“Visit the nearest health center to get more information about the free vaccination,” city hall said.

The local government offers free measles, mumps and rubella or MMR vaccines.

“Avoid close contact with someone who has measles or showing symptoms such as fever, cough, runny nose and skin rashes,” the QCESD said.
