CAMP OLIVAS, Pampanga, Philippines — Local candidates in Baler, Aurora surrendered 12 firearms to police on Friday.
In a report, the Aurora Police Provincial Office said it facilitated the voluntary surrender of 12 firearms from local politicians who are running in the May 12 election.
Col. Lucile Faycho, Aurora police director, said the candidates surrendered two shotguns, one AK-47 rifle, three .45-caliber pistols, three 9mm and one each of .40-caliber and .22-caliber pistols.
“This initiative showcases the commitment of Aurora’s leaders to maintaining peace and order, especially during the election period. We encourage other firearm holders to follow suit, as the Aurora PPO remains dedicated to ensuring a safe and orderly province,” Faycho said.
In Maguindanao, the Army recovered at least 11 high-powered firearms at various checkpoints conducted together with the Philippine National Police over the weekend.
Col. Edgar Catu, 601st Brigade commander, said the series of checkpoint operations were implemented after an ambush that wounded three Datu Abdullah Sangki town officials on Thursday.
Brig. Gen. Donald Gumiran, 6th Infantry Division chief, ordered troops to intensify security operations in coordination with the police to prevent the proliferation of loose firearms and armed groups in the province.
