Soldier wounded in Leyte clash
MANILA, Philippines — An Army soldier was wounded in an encounter with suspected New People’s Army (NPA) guerrillas in Jaro, Leyte on Monday.
The Army’s 8th Infantry Division (8ID) yesterday said that responding troopers recovered improvised explosive devices, a pistol and revolutionary documents at the scene of the firefight, which occurred in Barangay Candanhugan.
Brig. Gen. Noel Vestuir, chief of the Army’s 802nd Infantry Brigade, said villagers informed the military about the presence of the rebels in the area.
“The NPA again failed to carry out their terroristic activities due to the cooperation of the community and its people,” Estuir said.
Maj. Gen. Adonis Ariel Orio, chief of the 8ID, commended the troopers for protecting the people even on a holiday.
“As long as there is cooperation from the civilians, accomplishments like this is possible,” Orio said.
He urged the community to continue helping the government put an end to the country’s insurgency problem.
