100 vehicles cited, towed in MMDA’s road clearing

Metropolitan Manila Development Authority personnel conduct a clearing operation at the corner of Scout Borromeo and Scout Tuazon streets in Quezon City yesterday. The two streets are part of the alternative routes for the scheduled closure of the EDSA-Kamuning flyover starting on May 1.

MANILA, Philippines — Around 100 vehicles around Metro Manila were cited for illegal parking and towed late last week by Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) personnel as the agency declared that it would remain relentless in going after motorists whose vehicles obstruct public roads in the metropolis.

Personnel issued citation tickets for illegal parking to 87 owners and drivers of vehicles left parked along Quezon Avenue in Biak na Bato, Quezon City; Dapitan and Blumentritt Streets in Manila; Ortigas Avenue near La Salle Greenhills in Mandaluyong City; and F. Bluementritt, F. Manalo, Parada, Wilson, Annapolis and Connecticut Streets in San Juan City last Thursday.

Twenty vehicles were towed by the MMDA’s tow trucks.

Meanwhile, the MMDA also reprimanded drivers of public utility vehicles like jeepneys for picking up and unloading passengers in areas deemed illegal for loading and unloading at EDSA Rotonda in Pasay City.

Last Friday, road clearing efforts covered portions of EDSA in Quezon City and Caloocan City, Quezon Avenue, and Taft Avenue in Pasay City, where 110 motorists were given violation tickets and 16 cars towed for illegal parking along sidewalks or occupying half the lanes.

The towed vehicles were brought to the MMDA’s impounding area in Barangay Tumana, Marikina City.

Motorists caught for attended illegal parking are fined P1,000 while the penalty for unattended parking, or when the vehicle is left parked without the driver, is P2,000.

The charges remain after the proposal to increase them to P4,000 was deferred.
