Hoffman shared an anecdote from a ZEISS colleague who has worked at the company for over 20 years and was involved in developing one of its best products, the Otus lens.
"He had no limits in terms of materials, design, or cost, which resulted in our premium product, the Otus lens," Hoffman explained. "But when we moved into the mobile imaging market, he noticed there was very minimal space to execute great optical design. It's a highly engineered process to bring all the mechanics, optics, and software into such a small space."
"If you asked the optical designers for their biggest request, they’d probably just ask for a few more millimeters to further improve the image quality," she added.
