MANILA, Philippines —  The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) yesterday expressed support for President Marcos’ directive to implement a whole-of-government approach to combat hunger and poverty.

“The commission is one with the government in its initiative to combat hunger and malnutrition in the country,” the CHR said in a statement.

“By prioritizing several policies that address these issues, we reflect our unwavering commitment to building a more equitable and healthy nation,” it added.

Marcos, in a speech during the “Walang Gutom Awards” last week, highlighted the role of local government units in combating hunger and malnutrition, particularly in assisting in the implementation of the Enhanced Partnership Against Hunger and Poverty (EPAHP) program.

The EPAHP, implemented by the Department of Social Welfare and Development, aims to institutionalize efforts to alleviate hunger and promote food security.

Through programs like this, the CHR said it is “optimistic about creating a society that completely eradicates poverty, hunger and malnutrition.”

It said zero hunger is one of the Sustainable Development Goals and is aligned with key human rights principles enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 1987 Constitution, including the right to life, adequate food and health.
