Magnitude 6.7 quake hits Sarangani

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck Sarangani, Davao Occidental yesterday.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the quake was recorded 154 kilometers south of Balut Island at 4:48 a.m.

The quake was felt at Intensity 4, which is classified as moderately strong, in Sarangani town as well as in Glan, Kiamba and Malungon in Sarangani province.

It was felt at Intensity 3 in Nabunturan and Pantukan in Davao de Oro; Digos, Davao del Sur; Davao City, and Don Marcelino and Jose Abad Santos in Davao Occidental.

The same intensity was recorded in Matalam in Cotabato; Alabel and Mapatan in Sarangani; Koronadal, Polomolok, T’Boli and Tupi in South Cotabato, and General Santos City.

Intensity 2 was recorded in Zamboanga City; Maco in Davao de Oro; Antipas, Kabacan, Kidapawan, M’lang, Makilala, Pigcawayan, and Tulunan in Cotabato; Maitum in Sarangani; Banga, Lake Sebu, Norala, Sto. Nino, Surallah, Tampakan and Tantangan in South Cotabato, and Palbiang, President Quirino and Tacurong in Sultan Kudarat.

Phivolcs said the epicenter of the quake was within the boundaries of Indonesia, but was recorded by the Philippine Seismic Network.

The agency said the quake was generated by the Sangihe trench in Indonesia.

Thirty-eight aftershocks with magnitudes ranging from 2.5 to 3.8 were recorded as of 7 a.m. yesterday.

Phivolcs said no damage was expected from the quake.
