Comelec to file DQ cases vs BSKE bets
For premature campaigning
MANILA, Philippines — The first batch of disqualification cases against candidates in the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections (BSKE) involved in premature campaigning will be filed tomorrow, according to the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
”Upon initial assessment, there are 110 possible disqualification cases to be filed,” Comelec Chairman George Garcia said yesterday.
He said the poll body has dropped 160 complaints for lack of basis.
He said show-cause orders have been issued to 2,173 candidates as of Monday. Another 385 were issued yesterday.
Garcia said the Comelec has so far received responses from 304 candidates.
He said many of the candidates who sent their response claimed that they did not put up the illegal campaign materials.
Garcia said the Comelec is filing disqualification cases against candidates who submitted “unsatisfactory” explanations.
With the campaign period set to start on Oct. 19 yet, the poll body is expected to issue show-cause orders to more barangay and SK candidates engaged in premature campaigning.
Garcia had earlier warned candidates that the poll body would file charges against erring candidates.
He said charges would also be filed against local government officials who will interfere and prevent election personnel from removing illegal campaign materials and serving show-cause orders.
Garcia said 84 candidates are facing possible disqualification cases related to premature campaigning.
The Comelec has committed to resolve pending disqualification cases before election day on Oct. 30.
