MANILA, Philippines — The Marcos administration has reaffirmed its commitment to protect and promote freedom of the press, citing the media’s vital role in upholding democracy, transparency and human rights.

In observance of World Press Freedom Day on Wednesday, Malacañang said the government acknowledges the threats, intimidation, harassment, violence and other challenges that journalists as well as media organizations face in fulfilling their role.

“We condemn all attacks on press freedom and call for the protection of media workers worldwide,” the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) said in a statement yesterday.

“We honor the brave journalists who risk their lives every day to bring us the news that shape our world,” the PCO added.

The government advocates for a free media environment where journalists can work safely without fear of reprisals, according to Malacañang.

According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s report, the number of journalists killed worldwide went up by 50 percent in 2022.
