MANILA, Philippines — At least 17 motorcycle riders were flagged down by the Manila Police District (MPD) on Monday night for using modified mufflers or exhaust pipes.
The MPD’s Raxabago police station in Tondo launched the operation to implement the city ordinance against noisy motorcycle riders.
Seventeen motorcycle riders were given citation tickets for using exhaust pipes modified to make loud noises, according to the MPD.
The police operation was “normal and peaceful with no untoward incident,” according to a police report.
City Ordinance No. 8772 bans the use of “modified muffler or exhaust pipe… resulting in the emission of excessive, loud and unreasonable noise in the city of Manila” beyond the national standard of 99 decibels.
Violators face a fine ranging from P1,000 to P5,000, depending on the number of offenses committed, according to the ordinance passed by former mayor Isko Moreno in 2021.
