MANILA, Philippines — Only one and five volcanic earthquakes were recorded on Mt. Bulusan in Sorsogon and Kanlaon on Negros Island, respectively, in the past 24 hours.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said Bulusan generated plumes that rose 350 meters and drifted northwest.
Bulusan also generated sulfur dioxide flux of 250 tons per day.
The Bulusan Volcano Network recorded two quakes on Monday, five on Sunday and four each on Saturday and Friday.
Meanwhile, plumes that rose 300 meters were observed in Kanlaon.
Phivolcs said the edifices of Kanlaon and Bulusan remain inflated.
Winchelle Sevilla, Phivolcs volcano monitoring division science research specialist, said there should be a corresponding decrease in the other parameters of a volcano, such as sulphur dioxide and plume emissions, before it can be considered as returning to normal condition.
Phivolcs said Bulusan and Kanlaon remain under Alert Level 1. This means sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruption is possible.
