Tandang Sora flyover shut down for 2 years

MANILA, Philippines — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) yesterday advised motorists to brace for traffic jams along Commonwealth Avenue with the closure of the Tandang Sora flyover starting next week.

Four lanes of the flyover will be closed to vehicular traffic starting at around 11 p.m. on Feb. 23 for the construction of the Tandang Sora station of the Metro Rail Transit Line 7, according to MMDA general manager Jojo Garcia.

“The closure will last for the next two years,” Garcia told reporters. “It will affect more than 100,000 motorists traveling along Commonwealth Avenue and up to 3,000 motorists using the Tandang Sora intersections regularly.”

Garcia said the MMDA would set up a temporary U-turn slot located around 500 meters away from the Tandang Sora intersection to ease the traffic situation in the area. 

The agency will also deploy 154 traffic enforcers while the Quezon City government will provide at least 100 flagmen at choke points along Commonwealth Avenue.  

More roads closed

The MMDA shut down six major thoroughfares in the metropolis last night to give way to road repairs of the Department of Public Works and Highways. 

The southbound lanes of Lanuza Avenue and Bagong Ilog flyover were closed to traffic, including the street in front of a mall in Bonifacio Global City in Taguig and the second innermost lane along EDSA before Ermin Garcia street. 

The MMDA said Fairview Avenue, Regalado Avenue and the second lane of EDSA- Congressional Avenue and R. Magsaysay Boulevard to Ramon Magsaysay Bridge-Pureza street were closed to motorists. 

Litex on Commonwealth Avenue,  Quezon City was also closed to traffic for repairs.

These roads will be passable by 5 a.m. on Monday, according to the MMDA.

Motorists were advised to look for alternate routes to avoid incovenience.
