LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines — A Doppler radar in Bato, Catanduanes is now operational after two months of repair, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) announced yesterday.
Jun Dalida, PAGASA assistant director, said the radar has a range of 250 kilometers.
Dalida said the amount, volume and direction of rain could be seen as clear images using the Doppler radar.
“If there’s an incoming typhoon, we can provide hourly updates on our websites,” he said.
Albay disaster risk reduction and management officers said the lahar management and evacuation plan that Mayon crisis manager Francis Tolentino asked them to prepare in the event of heavy rains in the Bicol region iwould depend on the rain forecast.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said volcanic debris extruded by Mayon Volcano since Jan. 13 reached 64.2 million cubic meters.
“You can trust us to provide three- hour rainfall advisory and forecast in areas near Mayon Volcano as well as incoming weather disturbance through our Doppler radar,” Dalida said.
