3 MMDA enforcers suspended for beating up vendor
MANILA, Philippines — Three members of the clearing operations team of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) were suspended yesterday for beating up a buko (young coconut) vendor in one of their operations in Pasay City last Friday.
MMDA Chairman Danilo Lim said the enforcers were suspended for 15 days pending an investigation of their case.
Jojo Garcia, acting general manager of the MMDA, did not identify the three enforcers, all on job order status, but reports said two of them are Leonard Mojica and Victor Gimenez.
In a two-minute video posted by Facebook user Mhean Capaycapay, Mojica was seen beating up buko vendor Romnick Relos. He tried to tie up the vendor, who was resisting as he was being “pacified.”
Mojica said he lost his temper after Relos allegedly punched him in the jaw.
Relos, who was present before reporters in a press conference at the MMDA yesterday morning, said he is determined to file charges against the MMDA personnel.
“The employees should be responsible for their actions. It is the right of the victim to file a complaint against them. Definitely, the MMDA will not interfere or help them in any way,” Garcia said.
The MMDA will also have the three enforcers undergo drug tests, he said.
