MANILA, Philippines - Various consumers' rights advocacy groups will contest the fare increase for the Light Rail Transit (LRT) and Metro Rail Transit (MRT) set for January.

Renato Reyes Jr.,  secretary  general of militant group Bayan, said that the petitioners, led by Bayan and Riles and Tren, will request for a temporary restraining order (TRO) from the court on Jan. 5, 2015.

Reyes said they will be assisted by the National Union of People's Lawyers (NULP).

"We will question the basis for the increase, the authority of the agencies who approved the hike, and the process by which the increase was approved. We hope to get a TRO soon,"

Reyes said also called on train commuters to join the mass actions to oppose the impending fare increase.

"We call on commuters to support this initiative by joining various protest actions leading up to January 5 and beyond ... and let the world know that the Filipino people are resisting its unjust impositions," he added.
