People affected by 'Agaton' close to 900K
MANILA, Philippines - The number of persons affected by tropical depression Agaton in parts of Mindanao has increased to almost 900,000, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said on Wednesday.
In its latest situational report, the NDRRMC said that more than 186,000 families or over 895,000 persons have been affected by Agaton in 103 municipalities in 15 provinces of regions 10, 11, Caraga and Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.
Of the total population affected, more than 55,000 families or some 260,000 persons are now staying in 585 evacuation centers, the state disaster response agency added.
A total of 2,130 houses in the affected areas were destroyed, more than 830 of which were totally damaged, the NDRRMC said.
The NDRRMC said that the national government, through the Department of Social Welfare and Development and Department of Health and local government units, has provided more than P60 million worth of relief assistance to the affected families.
Meanwhile, the NDRRMC said that the death toll from Agaton remained at 45 and 68 more were injured. Eight people, meanwhile, remained missing.
