KIDAPAWAN CITY, Philippines - Local officials destroyed over the weekend more than 200 customized motorcycle exhaust mufflers seized in a continuing anti-noise pollution campaign that started early this year.
Superintendent Leo Ajero, chief of the Kidapawan City police, said the mufflers fashioned from rolled stainless steel sheets, were designed to produce loud noise, some emitting sounds like clatters of an airborne military Huey helicopter that are annoyingly irritating to others.
“Motorcycles fitted with this kind of mufflers also cause disturbance to people inside worship sites, to students of schools, and to patients in hospitals along the thoroughfares,†Ajero said.
Ajero said the campaign against improvised motorcycle mufflers is being spearheaded by Kidapawan City Mayor Joseph Evangelista.
The office of Evangelista had earlier called on local suppliers of motorcycle parts not to sell the banned mufflers.
