Magnitude 5.4 aftershock hits Bohol

MANILA, Philippines - Aftershocks from last week's deadly earthquake continued to hit Bohol, including a magnitude 5.4 tremor that struck the province on Monday morning, state volcanologists said.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the aftershock was recorded at 37 kilometers northeast of the provincial capital Tagbilaran City at 7:03 a.m.

The tremor was felt in the following areas: Intensity V in San Isidro town in Bohol, Intensity IV in Metro Cebu and Intensity III in Tagbilaran.

The quake is among the hundreds of aftershocks that followed the magnitude 7.2 earthquake that hit Bohol on Oct. 15, which has already killed 186 people as of Monday morning.

A total of 2,193 aftershocks have been recorded by Phivolcs as of 4 a.m. today, 46 of which were felt.

So far, authorities have not yet reported any major damage or casualty caused by the aftershocks.

The agency has advised the public not to panic since aftershocks normally occur following a major earthquake and may persist for weeks to months.

Last week's powerful temblor has affected over three million people including 109,712 individuals who are still inside evacuated centers.

Eleven people from Bohol are still missing.

The earthquake, which was equivalent to 32 atomic bombs according to Phivolcs, has damaged several bridges, roads, centuries-old churches and over 45,000 houses in Central Visayas.
