Petron completes cleanup of Cavite oil spill
MANILA, Philippines - Petron announced yesterday that it has completed the cleanup operations along the shores of Rosario, Tanza, Naic and Noveleta in Cavite, where an oil spill occurred recently.
Together with local community volunteers, Petron reported that it had cleaned about 25 kilometers affected by the spill.
Aside from the cleanup operation, the company conducted medical missions in Rosario benefiting at least 700 villagers. It is set to hold similar activities in the following days.
More than 20,000 food packs have been distributed with the help of provincial and local governments.
Petron said it continues to monitor the water, soil and marine life in these areas. It said results showed that water samples taken from affected areas have passed the oil or grease and oxygen standards.
The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) declared marine life in Cavite safe for consumption on Aug. 14.
“All the activities we have been conducting such as clean-up operations, disbursement of compensation, distribution of food items, and other forms of assistance have been done under the guidance and direction of the local governments involved. We have been closely following the instructions of local officials, especially in our host community of Rosario, since they know the needs of their constituents better. We are fortunate that the mayors of Rosario, Tanza, Naic, the provincial government of Cavite, and other concerned agencies have assisted us in giving help to those affected,†Petron corporate affairs head Charmaine Canillas said.
